Ahoy there matey!
In all our years of living in Leith, we’ve never been to The Ship on the Shore. As we sit here thinking up more pirate phrases we’re wondering why it’s taken us so long.
We decided to pop into The Ship on the Shore on a particularly soggy Sunday afternoon. I had an urge for fish and chips, and EdinBloggette eats anything with a tail. Sadly there’ll be no EdinPuppy anytime soon.
I’m semi-adventurous when it comes to fish these days, Captain Birdseye’s share prices plummeted when I moved from automatic to manual Fish Fingers. Saying that, I’ve never smashed open a langoustine and sucked out his (or her) brains. Today would be no different.
As soon as we entered The Ship on the Shore the aroma of the sea hit us, we walked past happy diners tucking into mounds of seafood and EdinBloggette’s eyes lit up. I took the liberty of ordering whilst my partner in crime took leave to shiver her timbers (dry her hair). I decided a Ship’s Hot Shellfish Platter and zesty Sauvignon would be a lovely Sunday treat.
I tried my best to disguise the order, which became increasingly difficult when a platter stand and bowl arrived. It’s for your Cullen skink, honest.
It was even more difficult to conceal the order when these arrived…
I’m sure I have some of these in my toolbox.
Yes, I have a toolbox. No, I never get round to finishing any DIY.
Then this happened…
Wow! This was so exciting. I’ve never had this much seafood so close to my face before. EdinBloggette was equally as excited, after a few obligatory photos we started digging in.
The baked oysters were divine, it was a shame to only have one each but we agreed we would be back for more soon. Agreeing to return to a restaurant after one mouthful is a huge achievement. We followed up with delicious king scallops and began dipping the chunky chips in the garlic butter.
Everything was cooked perfectly, the meaty lobster was wonderful, sitting on a bed of enormous mussels. The most mussels I’ve ever eaten, I’m not complaining – they were delightful. We put our tools to good use, smashing open the crab claws and scraping every last morsel of meat from the shell.
What else? Well, some lovely langoustines and succulent clams, did I mention the chunky chips already? This was one hell of a harvest and far more exciting than fish and chips, although I am determined to return for a portion soon.
This was such an interactive and involving meal, food has never been so much fun!
Our waitress told us of a couple who ordered a platter each and still had room for dessert. We only had room to look at the dessert menu after our platter, I’ve no idea how they achieved one each.
At £80 the platter isn’t exactly cheap, but the quality of the seafood (and a ridiculous number of mussels) made the price tag entirely justifiable. We’d happily eat it all over again!
Provenance plays an important part in The Ship on the Shore, as you would expect with Scotland’s world-famous seafood supplies. Fresh fish and seafood arrive daily, harvested only from sustainable stocks.
We’d forgotten all about the rain whilst we ate. Thankfully, the waiting staff hadn’t, kindly offering us an umbrella which had been in the lost property for a few months. This was a lovely touch and the icing on the cake to a lovely meal, it was just a shame we couldn’t make room for some cake.
You’ve probably already guessed, but we loved it.
EdinBloggette even sent the photos home, these have now done the rounds in Fermanagh and a table of 30 are making way as I type. Thankfully we won’t need to travel as far as them to get our next fresh fish fix.
