When a friend asked for some dating ideas in Edinburgh we thought it would be really easy to come up with, you see EdinBraw is a team of two and we’ve been dating our way around the city for quite some time.
It turns out coming up with some date recommendations was more difficult than we imagined, with so many to choose from it was tough to narrow down our selection.
We managed to whittle it down to five of the best Edinburgh dates ideas, but first let us introduce ourselves:
Gary – loves film, photography and cheesecake.
Gemma – loves dressmaking, travel and coats.
Right, so now that we’ve become acquainted it’s time to go on our first date.
Let’s start with something to drink, these are no ordinary cocktails though – these will blow your date’s socks clean off (don’t worry if your date isn’t wearing socks, they’ll still be impressed).

If anybody asks us for a place to go for cocktails we always tell them to head to Panda & Sons, it’s a bar disguised as a Barber Shop which you enter through a secret bookcase! It’s as good as it sounds and would be the perfect place to take a first date (or to keep revisiting on subsequent dates). The bar has such a great atmosphere and you’ll both be spoilt for choice with the drinks menu.
Top Tips: Make sure you reserve a table if it’s a weekend, and be sure to try The Birdcage Cocktail, a very theatrical drink which will have heads turning in the bar.
When coming up with a list of date recommendations we had to think long and hard before deciding on the perfect restaurant.
With so many great places to eat in Edinburgh, it was difficult to narrow down to one. We settled on The Magnum Bar and Restaurant, this was one of our earliest restaurant reviews and was a date to remember.
Dining out can be a huge risk for a first date, you don’t know what your date likes to eat at this stage so choosing a particular cuisine is risky. Also, you may think top-end prices impress, but what if you decide to split the bill, you may inadvertently put your date in debt!
It’s best to play things safe, but don’t sacrifice flavour and service, The Magnum Bar and Restaurant serves food that is loaded with flavour, there’s plenty of variety on the menu and all at a reasonable price.
Whether it’s a 1st date or a 400th, you’ll be in safe hands at The Magnum.
Top Tips: Try the Cranachan Cheesecake, a traditional Scottish dessert in cheesecake format – it’s like eating a cloud of joy. Smoked Salmon enthusiasts won’t be disappointed at The Magnum either, it’s absolutely delicious!
Edinburgh is beautiful and for some, the Castle may be the city’s centrepiece, but for us, it has to be Arthur’s Seat.
It’s not often you get the chance to scale a volcano in the middle of a city (don’t worry it’s extinct). Anybody up for the challenge will be rewarded with some spectacular views of Edinburgh.
This is no ordinary date, you’ll need to work as a team. There will be plenty of handholding and you may need to helping each other out – once you reach the top you’ll both feel on top of the world.
Top Tips: You can climb Arthur’s Seat from any direction but the easiest ascent is from the East. Don’t forget to bring a camera, wear sensible shoes and bring a torch if climbing late in the afternoon – darkness can arrive very suddenly.
Going to the pictures is a classic date and selecting a romantic cinema in Edinburgh was simple.
The Dominion is the ultimate cinema to take your significant other, why I hear you ask? Well, it has sofas, footrests and a table for your drinks!
Other cinemas won’t compare once you’ve settled into the cosy sofas of The Dominion.
Embrace one another during a romantic film, hold each other tight through a horror or kick back and enjoy a comedy together.
Top Tip: Film choice is essential for maximum enjoyment, but if in doubt, just let your date decide!
One of the best ways to get around Edinburgh is by bike, we love nothing more than hopping on to ours and cycling around the city.
To make the date extra special, make sure you plan plenty of stops and pack a picnic for extra brownie points.
We like to have a system when cycling around Edinburgh, a method of communication using our bells. A single ring advises the other that you are fine and well, two rings requests a break and three is for an emergency stop.
There are plenty of routes around Edinburgh that are free of traffic, so don’t panic if you don’t fancy cycling on the roads. We’ll often head to The Water of Leith and enjoy a scenic cycle with plenty of pit stops.
Don’t have a bike? Don’t worry, you can always hire one for the day.
We’ve thought about sourcing a tandem, but we like a little freedom and the ability to cycle side-by-side for some bicycle banter on our dates.
Top Tips: A helmet will stop your hair blowing in the wind as well as protecting your head, being safe is cool! Keep in mind you may have different levels of fitness. It’s a date with the added benefit of being a workout, but remember it’s not a race!
These are our top five date ideas in Edinburgh, a good mixture of entertainment, indulgence and exercise. It was tough to cut the listing down to only five, but we’re pretty happy with these.
