Standard Life Opening Event: Deep Time

Edinburgh International Festival is in full swing, but we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the breathtaking opening event on the 7th August. Deep Time was a celebration of Edinburgh, its landscape and its people.

Castle Rock was centre stage, a giant canvas for one of the most incredible lightshows. The geological story of Edinburgh provided inspiration for the piece, and with it the remarkable ideas of Edinburgh-born Enlightenment thinker James Hutton.

Key Deep Time stats:

  • 42 projecteors
  • 96 lux visible brightness
  • 14.km of fibre optic cabling
  • 7,000 sqm surface area
  • 27,000 tickets snapped up

The striking visuals were set to a soundtrack provided by Mogwai, the audio-visual pairing was phenomenal, we were honoured to be part of the crowd who witnessed something so monumental.

Deep Time exceeded all our expectations, our only minor quibble was that we couldn’t see it again the following weekend.

For those of you who missed it, check out the video below:

We were fortunate to have a great view and some fairly steady hands to capture these images:
