We’ve been meaning to visit Panda & Sons for a while now, a super secret, not so secret, secret bar.
Panda & Sons can be found in New Town, although it’s unlikely that you would find it unless you were meaning to. It’s convincingly disguised as a Barbershop, with no indication to those passing by that a bar is being concealed down below. Once you descend some stairs you’ll reach a dead end, the mystery continues as you open up a bookcase to reveal the secret bar.
Panda and Sons is featured in our guide to Edinburgh’s Best Secret bars
Those entering in the hope of a haircut will be severely disappointed, but those looking for hair of the dog will be sure to find something to their liking.
We entered the bookcase on a Sunday afternoon to escape the cold and kill a bit of time before heading off to the cinema. We were greeted upon arrival and once we took our seats were provided with some tasty cheese popcorn and water, a nice touch and something to consume whilst we perused the extensive menu.
The bar was incredibly cool and whilst not busy when we arrived it soon started to pick up with more and more people entering through the bookcase looking excitingly surprised.
Each cocktail was served up in its own way with a barbershop style paper straw poking out, which took us back to our childhood, we loved the use of a can for their take on a mojito (and will be something we’ll be attempting at home).
We also ordered up a birdcage, one of Panda & Sons signature cocktails, served under a glass dome with an abundance of smoke hiding the drink. The presentation of the drink was so theatrical and well worth visiting just to witness. As well as looking good and packing a punch the cocktails all tasted great too!
This speakeasy style bar is a great addition to Edinburgh’s bar scene and would be a great place to come before a big night out, we’ll definitely be back to try out the other cocktails on the menu soon.
