Keeping Fit with Edinburgh Leisure

New Year’s resolutions, we all make them but who keeps them? Well as it turns out, me! This is not a smug “I’m so good at keeping fit” post, more of an insight into all the fun you can have at Edinburgh Leisure.

Edinburgh Leisure Fitness Classes

In January 2016, I decided my resolution would be to join the local gym, I know, not a radical choice, but one I have tried (and failed) many times. Edinburgh Leisure is just across the road from EdinBraw HQ and I’ve been a member for ages. I started with the best intentions, going to the gym and the swimming pool for a few weeks… which then this dwindles into once a month… and then I just see it on my route home, with my head shamefully low.

Edinburgh Leisure has so many fitness classes. I used to look through the glass of Studio 1 (Leith Victoria) and think about how much I’d love to join in, however, I lacked the confidence to actually sign up and attend a class. I really liked the idea of attending a fitness class, the music which penetrated the gym had me itching to get involved – perhaps this would be just the motivation I needed to keep going with my failed fitness regime.

Decision made, I would face my fear and attend some gym classes, the hard part was deciding which ones… I took the plunge and gave not one, but four fitness classes a shot – Bodycombat, Zumba, Bodypump and Bodybalance. What did I have to lose (other than a few pounds)?

Bodycombat

A unique blend of various combat sports giving you a fat burning, strength-gaining workout. 

This is by far my favourite class, big shout-out to Deborah, Charis and Mari for their fun and relaxed style that has kept me returning a couple of times per week.

Top Tip – try to push yourself a little further each time, you’ll soon start to see the progress and have loads of fun.

Zumba

Ditch the workout, join the party! Zumba is a great way to condition your body to some funky music and moves from around the world; you’ll have so much fun, you won’t even notice you’re having a workout!

Roslyn leads this class each Monday and Thursday night in Leith Victoria, it’s a fun and upbeat workout that feels like a party. I have been known to miss a few steps but that’s the beauty of this class – there is no judgement just join in, do your best and have fun.

Top tip – don’t worry if you lack coordination, you’ll get there eventually, just go with the flow and have fun.  Also, this is a great class to double up with Bodycombat.

Bodypump

A muscular strength endurance workout using weights. Strengthens, conditions and tones.

This is by far the one I need to work on the most as it’s pretty tough-going, however, Mel talks you through all the steps and is on hand to help if, like me, you need an extra little push.

Top Tip – it takes a few sessions to get into the flow and understand the routines, but once you master them with the smaller weights you can start focusing on creating your beach body.

Bodybalance

A Yoga, Tai Chi, Pilates workout that builds flexibility and strength and leaves you feeling centred and calm.

Mari leads this class each Sunday morning, again another firm favourite of mine. It’s a perfect balance for the body and mind, I leave feeling refreshed and ready for my week ahead.

Pound

I recently gave Pound a go and I loved it! The only downside is that it’s on a Friday evening at 18:35, which is usually the time I get tempted by a glass or two of wine after coming home from work – this New Year’s resolution – leave the wine until after!

Top Tip – don’t hold back on the banging, it’s Friday – GO WILD!

Tums, Bums & Thighs

All these classes have helped boost my confidence, so much so that I ventured out to the bright lights of Portobello Leisure for Tums, Bums & Thighs – a conditioning class specifically for toning the mid to lower body. Danielle leads this class and is an absolute hoot – she’ll push you to the limit in the nicest and funniest way possible.

Top tip – be prepared to feel the burn the next day (stick with it as you will see a big difference in no time).

Mission Complete!

So that was my 2016 resolution summed up in a pumped-up and flexible nutshell – this time round I aim to make 2017 the year I keep up with all my classes and even try and add in a few more – my eyes are currently on Clubbercise – let’s be honest any exercise that feels more like a night out can only be a good thing!

Top Tip – for any people hesitant about starting any classes – stay focused, give things a go and most importantly… don’t worry!
